Comet Jacques (C/2014 E2), August 24, 2014   HOME INDEX BACK NEXT

This comet was discovered on March 13, 2014, when it was about magnitude 12. It made its closest approach to the Sun on July 2, and was about magnitude 6 in July. Because it was in the bright sky close to the Sun, binoculars were needed to see it even at its brightest.

This image was taken on August 24, four days before its closest approach to Earth. It had a bright blue-green coma, but no tail is visible.

Image details:  Exposure times of 1 minute each of red, green and blue, taken with an SBIG ST-8300M imager and a 14" Meade telescope at f/5.5.
