Milky Way from Sapello, New Mexico   HOME INDEX BACK NEXT

At the Star Hill Inn in Sapello, New Mexico, my family and I experienced some of the darkest skies we have ever seen.  With the naked eye, I could even glimpse the elusive dark nebula known as the “Pipe Nebula.”  This is the large dark area above the tree on the right, with the bowl of the pipe on the left, and the stem of the pipe stretching to the right.

This photograph taken with an ordinary camera and a 50-mm lens shows numerous star clusters and bright and dark nebulae.
