On this August evening we were sitting on the shore of Lake Champlain, looking north, hoping to catch a few Perseid meteors. Then the sky started to brighten up with large faint curtains of light. Near the horizon there was a hint of green, and the upper parts appeared white to the eye (but purple on flim).
