After seeing some northern lights on the previous evening, we tried again the following night because the Kp index was still fairly high. Auroras were again seen from various parts of the US, but we saw nothing at all visually. However, the camera did pick up some faint purple in the northern sky around 7:30 pm. For our location, this was definitely what is now called a "photographic aurora"-- showing up photographically but not visually. Polaris is in the top center of this image, and the bowl of the Big Dipper is rising above the chimney to the lower right. January 20, 2026
