Comet Hale-Bopp, April 1997   HOME INDEX BACK NEXT

After its closest approach to the Sun on April 1, Comet Hale-Bopp was visible in the evening after sunset.  It was one of the brightest objects in the night sky, and it could be seen even from light-poluted urban areas.  This is one of many pictures I took during the month of April.  The comet’s two tails are still visible, but the blue gas tail has become dimmer and more diffuse.

Image details:  A short exposure on Kodak Gold 1000 film, taken with a Canon camera and a telephoto lens.
